Brussels, 10/10/2008 (Agence Europe) -The European Commission has responded favourably to a request from the Spanish delegation to revise the framework of the communication of data on airline passengers to the families of victims in the event of an accident (see EUROPE 9756). Speaking at a press conference at the end of the first part of the "Transport" Council of Thursday 9 October, the commissioner for transport, Antonio Tajani, stated that the Commission "intended to take the appropriate measures regarding information for the families in the event of air crashes". The French Presidency of the Council will support this initiative, said French Secretary of State for Transport Dominique Bussereau. Speaking to the press, Mr Tajani nonetheless declined to specify the form these measures would take: "I have simply taken a political decision". The services of the Commission "will, over the coming weeks, look into all options of improving the texts which exist today", said the commissioner. Mr Tajani also accepted the request of the Italian delegation to set in place a structured system to monitor the development of the trans-European transport networks (see EUROPE 9756). "The Italian proposal is entirely positive", as it is a "maximum commitment to the development of this network", said Mr Tajani. He also announced that the Commission would lend its "technical" support to the African Union for the development of a trans-African transport network. (A.By./trans.fl)
