10,000 job seekers and 60 employers at European Job Day in Brussels

Brussels, 01/10/2008 (Agence Europe) - European Job Days are being held simultaneously all over Europe in September and October. In Brussels, the flagship event, which took place at the headquarters of the European Commission on 27 September, attracted almost 10,000 job seekers and 60 employers. As Employment and Social Affairs Commissioner Vladimir Spidla commented, the success of the day showed “that the EU is committed to providing more and better jobs for our citizens and facilitating access to employment in a tangible way”.

At the Brussels Job Day, 95% of employers were extremely satisfied with the quality of candidates they saw and most will be calling back an average of 40% of candidates for second interviews, says a Commission press release. The Brussels event was also an occasion to discover more about mobility. European Employment Service (EURES) advisers from 20 countries (Austria, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom) gave advice to job seekers and potential job changers on working and living conditions.

Almost 53% of candidates who pre-registered for the Brussels event were women and the overwhelming majority (70%) were job seekers who are looking for another job. Candidates were young (29% aged 18-25, and 44.6% aged 26-35). They are also highly educated: 34.6% possess an honours or Masters degree and 26.8% an ordinary degree.
