Experts propose creation of European security label

Brussels, 01/10/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 30 September, experts from the European Security, Research and Innovation Forum (ESRIF) proposed the setting up of a European security label in an attempt to stimulate European security research. Speaking at the third European security research conference in Paris, ESRIF president, Gijs de Vries, from the Netherlands declared, “we are proposing a European security label to help standardisation and certification of procedures in an effort to develop harmonised application of security measures in Europe”. During the presentation of the interim report, de Vries indicated that this European label will, “foster innovation and stimulate market security in Europe”. Created in 2007, ESRIF is made up of high level representatives from the public and private sectors. It aims to identify priority domains for implementing European level standards and streamlining security-related activities in the EU. He will be presenting a joint research plan towards the end of 2009. Mr de Vries is the former EU anti-terrorist coordinator and has declared that he is leaving to work at the Court of Auditors in the Netherlands. He may possibly be replaced by one of his vice presidents, Giancarlo Grasso de Finmeccanica from Italy. (B.C./trans/rh)
