Brussels, 30/09/2008 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission received more than 2,000 photographs in response to its invitation launched in March to portray the theme of cultures meeting and mixing in concrete neighbourhoods. All EU residents were encouraged to express their own view of what intercultural dialogue means, under the broad title of “Cultures on my street”. The four prize-winners were selected by a jury and congratulated on Thursday 25 September by Ján Figel', European Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Youth, who awarded them their prizes of photographic material and travel vouchers worth €15,000. The Commissioner pointed out that, “the many different approaches the entrants took to portraying intercultural dialogue underlined both the rich cultural diversity of Europe, and the strong common values that unite it”. The winning photos and further 21 short listed photographs also form part of the exhibition inaugurated today by Commissioner Figel' which will be displayed on the Berlaymont building esplanade until 31 October and then travel around Europe.
