EU puts off dossier on hosting Iraqi refugees to later

Brussels, 25/09/2008 (Agence Europe) - EU27 immigration ministers decided on Thursday 25 September to wait before enacting on the possible resettlement in EU member states of Iraqi refugees currently present in the countries neighbouring on Iraq. In its conclusions, the Council states that, before taking a stance, it awaits the report from the European Commission which is to send a mission to Jordan and Syria in liaison with the HCR to assess the situation of the most vulnerable Iraqi refugees in those countries, and to examine the possibilities for resettlement in member states willing to receive them. The Commission will begin this mission in early November and is expected to report back to the Council as soon as possible. The commissioner responsible for immigration, Jacques Barrot, indicated the Commission's intention to present a proposal on a resettlement programme for refugees on EU territory in autumn 2009.
