23/09/2008 (Agence Europe) -European Parliament President Hans-Gert Pöttering has announced the adoption of the written declaration recommending that a “European day of Remembrance for Victims of Stalinism and Nazism” be introduced, a Parliament press release of Monday 22 September says. A number of MEPs put forward a written declaration proposing that 23 August be proclaimed the European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Stalinism and Nazism. The aim is to preserve the memory of the victims of mass deportations and exterminations, while, at the same time, rooting democracy more firmly and reinforcing peace and stability in Europe. The declaration, which was signed by 409 MEPs, will be sent to the parliaments of member states. (B.C./transl.rt)
