Brussels, 23/09/2008 (Agence Europe) - All security conditions have now been met so that the European Parliament can again hold its plenary sessions in Strasbourg. The bureau of the Parliament endorsed, on Monday 22 September, the resumption of work by MEPs in the capital of Alsace, further to a report by experts. President of the EPP-ED Group, Joseph Daul, from Alsace, said on Tuesday 23 September that he was delighted by this decision based on security issues, glad that things had now returned to normal. He said Strasbourg-based auxiliaries for the EP sessions would receive indemnities for the two September plenary sessions held in Brussels. He compared this situation to “lay offs” that should be settled by the EP's insurance, without mentioning any specific sum. In early August, the collapse of the ceiling in the parliamentary meeting room had caused ten tonnes of debris to fall. French President Nicolas Sarkozy will be in Strasbourg during the October plenary session after the European Council. (M.B./transl.jl)
