In Beijing, Peter Mandelson hopes to encourage China to open its market to foreign investment

Brussels, 23/09/2008 (Agence Europe) - With the approach of the next EU-China summit to be held on 1 December in Lyons, Peter Mandelson begins an official 4-day visit to China on Wednesday 24 September. Given current upheavals in the international financial system, the trade commissioner's message to the Chinese authorities will be clear: - China must open up its market especially to investment in order to avoid a protectionist backlash in Europe and also worldwide.
