Latest work on sustainability criteria

Brussels, 12/09/2008 (Agence Europe) - The permanent representatives of member states (Coreper) studied, on Wednesday 10 September, the latest elements of the compromise on the sustainability criteria for biofuels, on which an ad hoc Council group is working. The compromise was submitted by the French EU Presidency, which above all specified the definition of great land wealth in terms of biological diversity to be safeguarded. It also strengthened the public information elements on reports provided by economic operators and stressed the importance of agreements sealed by the EU and third countries on these criteria. Furthermore, the European Commission is expected to present by 2015 at the latest a report on the possibility of introducing binding criteria concerning the protection of air, water and soil.
