05/09/2008 (Agence Europe) - In a statement released on Wednesday 3 September, European Union High Representative for the CFSP Javier Solana “condemns the formation of a new government by the Mauritanian military junta on 1 September”. This decision, like all the decisions taken by the self-proclaimed military junta, cannot, he said, he seen as legitimate. Solana noted that “the political crisis on Mauritania can only be resolved by the release of President Abdallahi and by the return to constitutional and democratic order”. He supported the “efforts of the African Union to achieve this end”. After overthrowing President Abdallahi on 6 August, the military leaders appointed a new cabinet of 22 ministers during the night of Saturday into Sunday. (A.B./transl.rt)
