THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/russia

05/09/2008 (Agence Europe) - The EU has called on the Russian authorities to shed light on the death of Magomed Yevloyev, the owner of the independent internet site “Ingushetiya.ru” which specialises in the Caucasus. In a press release published on 4 September, the French Presidency expresses its “dismay” at Yevloyev's death, one of the most vocal critics of the Kremlin, who died in unclear circumstances after being arrested by police at the airport in Nazran, the capital of Ingushetiya. The Presidency reiterated the importance which the EU attaches to the freedom of the press and emphasised its concern over the fresh outbreak of violence in the Northern Caucasus. (H.B./transl.rt)
