Brussels, 02/09/2008 (Agence Europe) - The first European summit on the Roma, organised by the European Commission, will be held on Tuesday 16 September in Brussels under the joint patronage of the president of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, and the French EU Council Presidency. The high level conference will examine questions regarding the integration of the European Roma minority as a follow-up to the Commission's report on the Roma published in the context of the renewed social agenda (EUROPE 9695). Over 400 representatives of the European institutions, national governments and parliaments, and civil society (including Roma organisations) will take part in the event. Speakers will include: President José Manuel Barroso, Vice-President Jacques Barrot (JHA), as well as Commissioners Danuta Hübner (regional), Vladimir Spidla (social, employment), Jan Figel (education), and Bernard Kouchner, French Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, and several ministers of EU member states and candidate states.
