Improving dialogue between fishermen and scientists

Brussels, 02/09/2008 (Agence Europe) - The theme of the conference to be held at the European Parliament in Brussels on Tuesday 9 September is enhanced dialogue between scientists and fishermen put to the service of the renewed Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). The aim of the debate, to which French Fisheries Minister Michel Barnier and Director General of DG MARE at the Commission Fokion Fotiadis have been invited, is to find ways to make scientific advice more effective in drawing up and implementing CFP measures. The conference is organised by the EP fisheries committee.

I cannot understand how scientists do not listen more to the people who make their living from the sea,” said French President Nicolas Sarkozy on 30 June (see EUROPE 9694). The French Presidency also wants to encourage debate among member state on the management of fishing quotas. An informal meeting of European fisheries ministers will be devoted to the CFP “health check” on 29 September. (L.C./transl.rh)
