01/08/2008 (Agence Europe) - The EU has expressed its “deepest concern” following Liberia's promulgation of a law reintroducing the death penalty for certain crimes. Liberia abolished the death penalty for all crimes in 2005. In a statement published by the French Presidency on 31 July, the EU says that the decision to reintroduce capital punishment was “an extremely disturbing signal which runs counter to the trend observed for many years in Africa and in the world as a whole”.
