MEPs call for better EU training for national judges

Brussels, 11/07/2008 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament recommends the development of training for national judges in the European Union. In their resolution, adopted on Wednesday 9 July in Strasbourg by 625 to 50 and 27 abstentions, MEPs recalled that national judges are the “frontline of European law” and that their role should therefore be reinforced. “National judges must be properly equipped legally and linguistically to deal with the challenges of an enlarged EU legal order”, said Diana Wallis (ALDE, UK), the author of the own-initiative report, in a press release. She also said she was glad that the French EU Presidency is treating the issue as a priority. In their resolution, MEPs set out a series of recommendations. In addition to the question of better language learning, they cover broader access to information, legal training, and the role of national judges in preliminary proceedings; and finally examine how the Community legislator may facilitate the task of national judges by improving the way they legislate, in particular by making the process more transparent.
