Brussels, 26/06/2008 (Agence Europe) - The third Summer University for Democracy, which is to be held by the Council of Europe in Strasbourg from 30 June-4 July, will bring together more than 600 participants from schools of political studies in 16 European countries. The five-day session, which will be opened on 30 June by Terry Davis, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, will include a series of workshops led by 75 experts and specialists on subjects such as democracy, international affairs, civil society and media. Numerous international figures will attend the event, such as Meglena Kuneva, European Commissioner for consumer protection (attending the opening session) and Jean-Paul Costa, President of the European Court of Human Rights (attending the closing ceremony). The summer universities enable common issues to be studied jointly and the regional links needed for dialogue to be woven. The Summer University for Democracy 2006 looked at “challenges to democracy” and the 2007 university looked at “the future of the European project”. (A.D./transl.fl)
