Brussels, 26/06/2008 (Agence Europe) - In an own-initiative report by Maria Badia I Cutchet (PES, Spain), adopted on Tuesday 24 June by the committee on culture and education at the European Parliament, emphasis is placed on the need to raise the quality of teacher training so that teachers can then enhance pupil performance. MEPs call on member states to attach greater importance to this aspect in order to make the progress needed to achieve the Lisbon Strategy education and training objectives. They suggest teacher training qualifications, possible on a regular basis, should be recognised in all member states. They also deplore the fact that there are great differences between teachers' average wages in different member states and call for teachers to benefit from good remuneration packages reflecting their importance for society. Greater mobility, better cooperation and team work are the three goals to be attained to improve creativity and innovation of teaching methods, MEPs underline, also stressing the advantages to be gained from an exchange of best practice.
