Brussels, 16/06/2008 (Agence Europe) -In May 2008, the inflation rate of the Eurozone reached 3.7%, compared to 3.9% in April and 1.9% in the same period of the year 2007. The monthly inflation rate was 0.6%. In the EU27, the inflation rate stood at 3.9% in May 2008, compared to 3.6% the previous month and 2.1% the same time last year. The monthly inflation rate also stood at 0.6%. "It is going up, and that is not good", said a spokesperson for Commissioner Joaquin Almunía, who confirmed the major impact of energy prices and food products in this new increase. Over one year (between May 2007 and May 2008), prices for fuel for transport have risen by 40%, heating fuel by 47.5% and milk, eggs and cheese by 14%. Compared to April 2008, it is still energy (3.6%) which is pushing prices up, she added, calling on the social partners for prudence to avoid an inflationary spiral on prices and wages.
