06/06/2008 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament is set to agree that the future president of the European Council and high representative (HR) for the Union for foreign and security policy - two posts created by the Lisbon Treaty - should be designated, as foreseen, at the end of this year and not, as some would have liked, as a “package” after the European elections of 2009. According to French MEP Alain Lamassoure (EPP-ED), the EP rapporteur on the institutional implications of the Lisbon Treaty, Jean-Luc Dehaene of Belgium, has reached the conclusion that the timetable adopted by the European Council for appointment in two stages should be maintained - December 2008 for the president of the European Council and the “transitional” HR; autumn 2009 for the president of the Commission, the “definitive” HR and president of the EP. However, the report by Mr Dehaene will suggest that the next nominations, in 2014, should be as a package, Mr Lamassoure said on 5 June speaking to a small group of journalists. The draft report by Mr Dehaene will be published after the Irish referendum (12 June). Its vote in plenary session is foreseen for September. (H.B./transl. jl)
