Brussels, 06/06/2008 (Agence Europe) - EU High Representative for CFSP Javier Solana was in Abkhazia on Friday 6 June, where he called for more active participation by the EU in resolving the Abkhazia-Georgia conflict. After his meeting with Sergei Bagapch, the leader of the self-proclaimed republic to the north-west of Georgia, Mr Solana also stressed the role to be played by Russia in seeking a solution. “I can see no decision without the participation of Russia” which is a “very important and, I hope, constructive player in the region”, he stressed, hoping that relations between Moscow and Tbilissi would thaw. “I think we can solve our difficulties ourselves and shape our relationship in the long term”, Russian President Dmitri Medvedev said, before a meeting with his Georgian counterpart, Mikheil Saakachvili, in Saint Petersbourg. Developments in the situation in the region will be examined during the EU-Russia summit on 26 and 27 June in Khanty-Mansiisk. (A.B./transl.jl)
