02/06/2008 (Agence Europe) - The member of the European Parliament and vice-president of the parliamentary sub-committee on human rights, Patrick Gaubert (PPE-DE, français), published a press release on Wednesday 28 May, in which he expresses surprise at the negative reactions of certain NGOs at the temporary compromise on the returns directive between the Slovenian Presidency of the EU, the European Parliament and representatives of the Council (EUROPE 9667). "Although this draft directive is not as perfect as the European Parliament would have wished, it is neither reasonable nor useful to comment on the elements it does not contain or willingly to distort certain of its provisions", said Mr Gaubert (our translation). He takes the view that this proposed directive is to be welcomed, as it puts an end to the legal uncertainty and will lead to a harmonisation of rules which vary unacceptably between Member States.
