Brussels, 30/05/2008 (Agence Europe) - The EU has expressed its deep concern about the escalation of violence in the Sudanese region of Abyei. “If not urgently resolved, this latest crisis could pose a serious threat to the implementation of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA)”, the Slovenian EU Presidency warns in a declaration issued on 29 May. The region of Abyei is the cause of friction between North and South Sudan, as it is located very near to the oilfield that produces half of Sudan's oil. “The European Union calls upon the partners in the Sudanese Government of National Unity to immediately cease all hostilities, to respect the ceasefire agreed upon and secure the full implementation of the security arrangements set out in the CPA”, the declaration reads.
