Brussels, 30/05/2008 (Agence Europe) - The eurozone unemployment rate reached 7.1% in April 2008, unchanged compared to March and down compared to the same period in 2007, when it was 7.5%. In the EU27, the unemployment rate was 6.7% in April 2008, also unchanged compared to March. It was 7.2% in April 2007. The lowest unemployment rates were recorded in Denmark (2.7%) and the Netherlands (2.8%). The highest were in Slovakia (10.0%) and Spain (9.6%). Twenty-four member states recorded a fall in their unemployment rate over one year, including Poland (from 10.1% to 7.7%), Bulgaria (from 7.3% to 5.5%) and Slovakia (from 11.4% to 10.0%). The rate was up in Spain (8.1% to 9.6%), and Ireland (4.6% to 5.7%). The rate of unemployment was 5.0% in the United States in April 2008, and 3.8% in Japan in March 2008. (A.B.)
