Several former EU leaders call for 'firm response' to financial crisis

Brussels, 23/05/2008 (Agence Europe) - Several former EU leaders, including Jacques Delors, Paavo Lipponen, Göran Persson, Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, Michel Rocard, Jacques Santer and Helmut Schmidt, sent a message this week to European bodies urging them to come up with a firm response to the current financial crisis, which has exposed business ethics and is endangering the EU economy. Arguing that the crisis clearly demonstrates that the financial industry is incapable of self-regulation, they call for the creation of a European crisis committee (of top politicians and high-ranking economists) to make a detailed analysis of the financial crisis, identify the underlying socio-economic risks and come up with a series of measures to avert or limit risk. A global financial conference could be organised to rethink global economic and financial governance rules. (M.B.)
