Louis Michel urges junta to take tangible action

Brussels, 15/05/2008 (Agence Europe) - In Burma, where he is planning to stay for 48 hours, EU Development and Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Louis Michel urged the Burmese social affairs ministry to take tangible action to ensure humanitarian and social workers can enter the country and get aid to the victims of Cyclone Nargis. He said that every hour was important because thousands of lives were at stake. Describing Michel's first meeting at 'positive,' his spokesman conceded, however, that the junta had not yet given any definite answer. Michel also asked for the granting of many multiple visas and for local and foreign humanitarian workers alike to be allowed to travel freely, and for the opening of the Pathein airbase south of Rangoon. Michel requested meetings on 16 May with the Burmese foreign minister and prime minister. (A.N.)
