Brussels, 15/05/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 15 May in Brussels, Dominique Strauss-Kahn declared that the worst of the crisis is over but not all of the effects of the crisis. The director general of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) was addressing the EP's economic and monetary affairs committee and stated that “there are good reasons to believe that the largest part of disclosure in financial institutions has been done, especially in the United States…so the worst news is behind us”. Nevertheless, he did add that “the main problem is the linkages between the financial crisis and the real economy and this is not behind us” - a problem that could take “several quarters” to pan out. Faced with this kind of global crisis, and a relatively new kind (crises previously resulted from problems in developing countries, he stressed), a multilateral response is needed, explained Strauss-Kahn, who called for the IMF to play a greater role.
