Brussels, 14/05/2008 (Agence Europe) - Vienna has announced that, with a derogation from Schengen area rules, it intends to re-introduce border controls to meet the needs of Euro 2008, which will take place in Austria and Switzerland from 7-29 June. Controls will be in place from 2 June until 1 July 2008. Swiss border controls will continue as normal since Switzerland is not yet a member of the European open border area. Austria and Switzerland expect two million visitors. In the face of this expected influx of supporters, the two countries have decided to lay particular emphasis on security. Austria will deploy 27,000 police officers and 3,000 soldiers. Switzerland will employ similar numbers. The countries will also have the support of 2,500 foreign police officers seconded from participating countries, mainly Germany (1,700) and France (750). Among these officers will be specialists whose job it will be to detect potential trouble makers. There will also be considerable video surveillance, and strict control of air space during the tournament. (B.C.)
