Jens-Peter Bonde's “political testament”

Brussels, 08/05/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Friday 9 May, Danish MEP Jens-Peter Bonde (IND/DEM) will leave the European Parliament, where he has been a member since 1979, to lead the EUDemocrats, a trans-European political alliance whose aim is to strengthen democracy in the European institutions and member states. On 7 May, Bonde published his 10-point “political testament” for greater transparency in the EU. Thus, Bonde says, all European laws should be supported by 75% of member countries and a simple majority in the EP. Further, all meetings of Community institutions should be open to the public (with the names of all members of the various Council, Commission and EP working groups published online) and all documents made available to the public, unless specifically made secret. Bonds also calls for information on all EU expenses to be made available on internet, and for unnecessary laws to be scrapped. There should, he says, be elections for all the leading EU offices (“And why not let each country choose its Commissioner … in the same manner as they elect their members of the European Parliament?” he asks) and the EP should hold all its sessions in Brussels, to avoid the costly travelling to Strasbourg. He also calls for the EU to have a “Basic Treaty”, approved by referendum in all member states. For more information, go to http://www.eudemocrats.org (H.B.)
