Brussels, 08/05/2008 (Agence Europe) - On the evening of Wednesday 7 May, Italian Franco Frattini, the hitherto European Justice, Security and Freedom Commissioner, submitted his resignation to Commission President José Manuel Barroso in order to take up the post of Foreign Minister in the government of Silvio Berlusconi, the European Commission spokesman said on Thursday 8 May. Current Transport Commissioner Jacques Barrot will replace Frattini permanently. The next Transport Commissioner is likely to be Italian Antonio Tajani. At the time of going to press on Thursday evening, the very first cabinet meeting was being held in Rome, at which it was expected Tajani would be proposed for the post of Commissioner. His appointment to his new post by Barroso will then follow shortly. (B.C.)
