Brussels, 30/04/2008 (Agence Europe) - The Slovenian presidency of the EU is determined to reach a definitive agreement as soon as possible on a project it is particularly keen on: recognition of mutual judgements by default. The proposal was expected to be adopted on 18 April but received a mixed response from several delegations (EUROPE 9648): Germany, Italy and Netherlands, to mention some of them. One diplomat acknowledged that the, “presidency is a bit nervous” and explained that it had arranged a meeting of member state justice and home affairs specialist advisors for mid May in an effort to resolve the different problems and ultimately obtain an agreement during the June JHA Council. There is a problem that this proposal, like others will become null and void if it is not adopted by the end of the year (EUROPE 9653). Sweden has declared that given the reservations expressed by its parliament, the text should be subject to obligatory adoption during the April Council in the hope of obtaining a definitive adoption in 2008. With the perspective of an agreement in June, Sweden would only say that it would do all it could to convince its parliament in this sense. (B.C)
