Brussels, 07/04/2008 (Agence Europe) - Two years after its launch, the top level domain “.eu” has had enormous success, making it one of the 10 biggest top-level domains in the world, alongside the long-established addresses such as “.com”, “.net” and “.org”. Registrations for “.eu” domains have been growing continuously following the first boom year. In addition, subscriptions for 80% of domain names have been renewed for their second year, which is a vote of confidence for “.eu”. More specifically, more than 2.8 million European internet identities have been allocated in total to businesses, NGOs and Community residents, bringing “.eu” up to fourth place at European level and ninth in the world. As regards the total number of “.eu” registrations per country of origin, Germany remains top of the list with 31.4%, followed by the Netherlands (13.3%), France (7.3%) in Italy (5.1%). In terms of growth figures, the situation looks differently. With overall growth of 11% to 2007, the number of “.eu” registrations in Poland increased by 48.6% in 2007 alone, 48.4% in Lithuania and 39.9% in Finland. The “.eu” domain is corresponding to the expectations of users, as shown by recent customer satisfaction surveys with users such as Bridgestone, Innovision, Touring Cars and the European Network for Quality Assurance in Higher Education. By promoting a clearly European “online” identity, “.eu” helps citizens and businesses to draw all benefits of the single market and the liberties engendered by it, states the European Commission. “The stronger Europe's single market for telecommunications grows, the more we ought to ensure that .eu becomes more visible, secure and affordable”, said Viviane Reding, the European Commissioner for the information society and the media.
