Sarkozy calls for greater cooperation between France and Britain

Brussels, 26/03/2008 (Agence Europe) - Before his state visit to London, where he met Queen Elisabeth II on Wednesday 26, the French president called on the United Kingdom to play its full role in Europe. “We need you, the British, within Europe”, Nicolas Sarkozy said speaking on BBC Radio 4. He stressed: “We need you, we need your strength, we need your potential, we need your dynamism”, and then went on to call on Britain to help build a “different” Europe. In this speech, which paves the way for his two-day state visit, he also said he was in favour of a “new Franco-British brotherhood”, that he hopes will be “fleshed out by concrete projects on the economy, immigration, security, defence”, all flagship subjects for the upcoming French EU Council Presidency. The French head of state spoke along the same lines on Wednesday before the House of Commons and the House of Lords meeting in Westminster. His visit ends on Thursday with a summit meeting that he will preside with Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
