Joint assembly says good governance in ACP countries and fairer trade can help lessen negative impact of structural adjustment

Brussels, 26/03/2008 (Agence Europe) - Structural adjustment programmes (SAPs) containing many conditions were imposed on African countries in the 1980s, which had many negative repercussions for them. The ACP/EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly (JPA) is convinced that the EU/ACP partnership can be used to put things back onto a more balanced footing. A resolution on the social and environmental consequences of the SAP, adopted on 20 March in Ljubljana during its 15th session, bears this out....
