Brussels, 03/03/2008 (Agence Europe) - In a new round of infringement proceedings in the telecoms sector, the European Commission closed two cases against Latvia and Poland on Friday 29 February. In Latvia's case, the Commission was unhappy about the lack of availability of caller location information in relation to mobile 112 calls. This information is now available to emergency services in respect of calls from both fixed and mobile telephones, the Commission said. It has decided also to suspend its previous decision to refer Poland to the European Court of Justice for the same reasons. The Polish authorities have recently informed the Commission that an interim solution has now been put in place. Information Society and Media Commissioner Viviane Reding will travel to Warsaw on 14 March, and the Commission hopes that her visit will be crowned with success and that there will be no need to resume proceedings, said her spokesman Martin Selmayr. There are five member states - Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Romania and Slovakia - in which caller location information for 112 calls from mobile phones is not yet available. In addition, the 112 number is not yet fully available in Bulgaria. The Commission also has closed proceedings against Poland as there has been a comprehensive directory inquiry service since the beginning of the year. (I.L.)
