25/02/2008 (Agence Europe) - The European metals industries are losing ground on the world market because they face greater constraints than their counterparts in other parts of the world. To remain competitive, energy has to be available at competitive prices - without neglecting environmental aspects - and there has to be emphasis on innovation. These are the main conclusions of a communication adopted by the European Commission on Friday 22 February. “Metals industries have a vital contribution to make to the competitiveness of manufacturing industry and jobs in Europe, so it must be able to compete on a level playing field with their global competitors. Maintaining high levels of eco-efficiency and innovation will be crucial for their future success,” said European Industrial Policy Commissioner Günter Verheugen.
