Parliament horrified by crimes perpetrated in North-Kivu

Brussels, 22/02/2008 (Agence Europe) - In a joint resolution by the EPP-ED, PES, ALDE, UEN, Greens and GUE/NGL groups, which was adopted in Strasbourg on Thursday 21 February, the European Parliament has condemned the massacres and crimes against humanity perpetrated over the last few years in North-Kivu (a province of the Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC) and calls on all of the competent national and international authorities to bring their perpetrators to justice. Calling on the Security Council of the UN to take all measures which may prevent attacks on civil populations in North-Kivu as a matter of urgency, the EP spoke out against the fact that despite its mandate, the United Nations Mission in DRC, MONUC, has not had sufficient means to allow it to prevent these measures and all abuses and infringements of humans rights in North-Kivu. Welcoming the meeting between the foreign affairs ministers of Congo and Rwanda in September 2007, the EP calls on Kigali to become properly involved in the various attempts being made to resolve the conflict in North-Kivu. Lastly, it calls on the Council and the European Commission to make emergency funds available for humanitarian purposes for North-Kivu. (E.H.)
