Turkish offensive “not best response”, says Javier Solana

Brussels, 22/02/2008 (Agence Europe) - The high representative of the European Union, Javier Solana, speaking on Friday 22 February on the sidelines of the informal meeting in Brdo, Slovenia, said that the Turkish offensive in Northern Iraq was not the best answer to resolve the problem of Kurdish terrorism. “We understand the concerns of the Turks”, he said, stressing that “this action was not, in our view, the best response”. “The territorial integrity of Iraq is, in our view, extremely important”, Mr Solana continued, quoted by AFP. The European Commission itself called on Turkey, in Brussels on Friday, to avoid “any disproportionate military action”. “We are following the situation closely”, a Commission spokesperson, Cristina Nagy, told the press. The Turkish army announced on Friday that it had launched a land operation in Northern Iraq the day before, in pursuit of Kurdish separatist rebels based there, which was confirmed by the American forces in Iraq, which described the operation as “limited”.
