Brussels, 15/02/2008 (Agence Europe) - In a press release published on Thursday 14 February, EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana condemned the “renewed and escalating violence” in Western Darfur and called for the “earliest possible deployment of EUFOR Chad/RCA” to improve the security of the Darfur refugee camps set up in eastern Chad and in the north-eastern part of the Republic of Central Africa. Solana also confirmed resumption of EUFOR Chad/RCA deployment which should reach initial operational capability by mid March. Deployment of this European force was interrupted after armed rebels attacked the Chadian capital, N'Djamena, in early February. According to the NGO, Médecins sans frontières, several thousand people were forced to take refuge in Chad after a wave of violent air attacks by the Sudanese army in north-eastern Darfur between 8-10 February, and the pillaging that followed and is still going on.
