05/02/2008 (Agence Europe) - According to the daily Les Echos, European Commission Vice-President with responsibility for Transport Jacques Barrot plans to discuss the funding of major rail transport corridors at the informal Transport Ministers' meeting in Ljubljana on 5-6 May. Barrot, who, on Friday 1 February, presented his priorities for 2008, confirmed that the revenue generated by the new “Eurovignette” directive, which will come into force in 2009-2010, could be used to update and improve the road network or to develop modes of transport other than road, such as rail or sea. “We will put a legal framework in place for these tolls, so that, with roads accounting for 80% of greenhouse gas emissions, the costs of pollution, noise and road congestion can be built into road transport costs,” he told the French business daily.
