Brussels, 25/01/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 28 January, Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs and Slovenian Economy Minister and Chairman of the Energy Council Andrej Vizjak will open the second European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW 2008). This second Sustainable Energy Week will be devoted to the main strategies and initiatives from all stakeholders for a more sustainable future. Featuring very highly will be the new package of proposed measures to combat global warming announced by the European Commission on 23 January (see EUROPE 9586). From 28 January to 1 February there will be almost 80 events organised in eight member states by more than 100 major economic and social players all sharing the same concern: finding the right response to climate change. On Monday 28 January, electric light bulb manufacturers and distributors, and representatives of the electricity industry (Eurelectric) will sign an agreement establishing a framework for the distribution of millions of low energy light bulbs throughout Europe. Commissioner Piebalgs will attend this event. On the same day, Piebalgs, Michel Delebarre, President of the Committee of the Regions, and MEP Claude Turmes (Greens, Luxembourg), along with a representative of the Slovenian presidency, will attend the European Solar Day conference organised by the European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA). On Tuesday 29 January, Piebalgs and elected representatives of major European cities will officially launch the Covenant of Mayors: in accepting this pact, local authorities commit themselves to exceeding the target set by the EU of a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions. Almost 100 cities in Europe, including 15 capitals, have indicated their desire to take part. The Sustainable Energy Week programme is available at: http: //http://www.eusew.eu (E.H.)
