Brussels, 08/01/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 10 January, over 400 European Muslim organisations will sign the Muslim Charter for Europe. Drawn up on the initiative of the Federation of Islamic Organisation of Europe (FIOE), the charter provides an “Islamic code of conduct” for Muslims living in Europe. It commits the European Muslim community to taking part in the construction of Europe and a united society, to taking part in the drive for the peace and well-being of our societies and to playing a full citizens' role in the respect of justice, equality of rights and difference. For the first time, the charter sets guidelines for European Muslims in line with European legislation. It deals with social issues, such as the education of children. It also contains a very strong position against terrorism and a plea for the wearing of the veil and places of prayer to be respected. The charter also stresses the need for Muslims to respect non-Muslims. (G.B.)
