Brussels, 08/01/2008 (Agence Europe) - In November 2007, retail sales in the eurozone fell by 0.5% and by 0.2% in the EU27 compared to October 2007, when they fell by 0.7% and 0.4% respectively. Compared to November 2006, the sales index was down 1.4% in the eurozone, but increased by 0.9% in the EU27, according to information published on Tuesday 8 January by Eurostat. At a monthly rate, the food/beverages/tobacco sector was down 0.4% in the eurozone and 0.2% in the EU27, while sales in the non-food sector were down by 0.6% and 0.2% respectively. Retail sales were up in nine member states, including Luxembourg (+13.5%) and down in 7, especially Belgium (-1.1%). At an annual rate, retail sales increased in 12 member states and fell in 4. The largest increases were noted in Poland (+13.1%), Latvia (+12.3%), Lithuania (+9.3%) and Sweden (+5.6%) and the largest falls were in Belgium (-5.3%) and Denmark (-0.8%). (A.B.)
