03/01/2008 (Agence Europe) - Javier Solana has acknowledged the completion of the mandate of the EU civilian-military action in support of the African Union (AU) mission in Sudan/Darfur (AMIS). The mission “was a concrete example of the ever closer relations that are developing between the EU and the AU,” he said in a press release issued on 27 December. He underlined, however, that it is to the AU that the main peace-keeping and security role on the continent of Africa will fall. In line with its mandate, the EU civilian-military mission ended on 31 December 2007 with the handover from AMIS to UNAMID, the joint African Union-United Nations operation. (A.By.)
