THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/western balkans

03/01/2008 (Agence Europe) - On 27 December 2007, EU High Representative for the CFSP Javier Solana congratulated the European Union Monitoring Mission (EUMM) on the successful completion of its mandate in the Western Balkans. “A new perspective has now opened for the Western Balkans,” Solana said, welcoming the restoration of peace and stability on the region. He also said, however, that there was a need for further considerable efforts “to consolidate those results and continue on the path of stability and development”. In line with the Council joint action (see EUROPE 9320), the EUMM, which was launched in 2001, ended on 31 December 2007. The EUMM opened offices in Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYRM), Serbia (including in Kosovo), Croatia, Albania and Montenegro. (A.By.)
