Brussels, 11/12/2007 (Agence Europe) - Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen announced on Tuesday 11 December that his government had given up the idea of holding a referendum on ratification of the new Reform Treaty of the EU, to be signed on Thursday 13 December by the heads of state and government in Lisbon (“The Lisbon Treaty”). The government came to the conclusion that Denmark's sovereignty was not placed in jeopardy by the new treaty. “When sovereignty is in question, then a referendum is needed. When this is not the case, Parliament may ratify the text”, Rasmussen explained. At this stage, only Ireland is certain that it will organise a referendum, probably in the summer of 2008. (H.B.)
