Brussels, 27/11/2007 (Agence Europe) - On behalf of Green group of the European Parliament, German MEP Rebecca Harms presented a report on Wednesday 21 November on the state of the nuclear power industry in the world in 2007, which contradicts the “talk of a global revival of nuclear power”, to echo the observations of the report's author, Mycle Schneider. According to him, three observations back this statement: - nuclear power's share of electricity production has decreased over the last few years in 21 out of the 31 countries which use nuclear power stations; - the number of nuclear reactors in use is decreasing, with five fewer reactor units in use in 2007 compared to 2002; - the statistics on units being constructed record only 32 units, which is 20 fewer than were in construction at the end of the 1990s. At the same time, the average age of the power stations in use is constantly increasing and currently stands at 23 years. The report warns against the consequences of the campaign being waged by the nuclear lobby: - an increase in public spending on nuclear power could hamper the development of intelligent energy policies; - the industry's incapacity to respond to its own demands, since restricted production capacities are behind competition between the creation of new units and maintenance of the units in use; - the lack of skills and qualified workers in the sector, which creates competition between new construction, running, surveillance and control projects.
