Brussels, 09/10/2007 (Agence Europe) - “Europe without frontiers” will be the watchword of the Czech EU presidency during the first half of 2009, said Mirek Topolanek, Czech Prime Minister, speaking during his visit to Paris on Monday. Topolanek, cited by Le Figaro of 9 October, said a series of barriers must be lifted as they “complicate life”. He explained that these are “mainly commercial obstacles, but also psychological, as in the case of Polish plumbers, for example. The four fundamental freedoms must be implemented: - freedom of movement for persons, goods, services and capital”. Topolanek takes the view that it is important to “take Europe away from the bureaucrats” and “give it back to the citizens”. Czech diplomats in Brussels confirm the future Czech presidency's general direction but stress that it is still too early to speak of a specific work programme, which has still to be defined. (hb)
