09/10/2007 (Agence Europe) - The European Commissioner for justice, Franco Frattini made an appeal on Monday 8 October for the adoption of strengthened measures and better cooperation in the fight against the trafficking of human beings, a traffic that affects more than 1.2 million people every year (80% of women and 50% of them children). During a conference on this subject in Porto, Frattini indicated, “policies for fighting this traffic should be strengthened because the response has been feeble”. According to the AFP, during his video intervention, Mr Frattini backed the principle of, “zero tolerance for criminals and total protection for victims”. According to Frattini, cooperation in and outside the EU is vital. Europol and Interpol have “significant roles to play”. According to the Portuguese secretary of state, Jorge Lacao, another problem closely linked to the traffic of human beings is that of trafficking human organs across the globe. (bc)
