At least two MEPs taken in for questioning at banned demonstration in Brussels

Brussels, 11/09/2007 (Agence Europe) - A demonstration banned by the Bourgmestre of Brussels led to several dozen people, including the leader of the Flemish Vlaams Belang party and MEP Franck Vanhecke being held for questioning. He was joined by Italian Lega Nord MEP Mario Borghezio and other nationalist and xenophobic elected representatives, including one Frenchman. The Demonstration, banned for public order reasons, was supposed to alert the European Parliament to the dangers posed by Islam to the freedom of expression and security. Caught in the act and taken in, the MEPs were transferred to cells in the Brussels Palais de Justice. Given the circumstances, they could be charged without the Belgian authorities having to request that their immunity be lifted. The MEPs could, however, call on the Parliament to defend their immunity. The legal committee would then have to decide on an unusual case of conflict between the need to maintain public order and immunity granted to the political actions of an MEP. (oj)
