Brussels, 11/09/2007 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament environment committee will make a statement on 12 September about the revised strategy proposed by the Commission for reducing C02 emissions from new cars and light commercial vehicles in the EU. On the day before this vote, the Greens/EFA group at the parliament called on MEPs to resist car makers crying wolf. In a press release Rebecca Harms pointed out that the 120 grams objective is, “not a figure that has been plucked out of thin air” but approved by legislators ten years ago to be attained in 2005 or 2010 at the latest. This appeal by the Greens comes just when rapporteur Chris Davies (British Liberal) suggests leaving more time to car makers and allowing them to set a more ambitious target deferred to 2015 (EUROPE 9460). This is also the moment that European car makers chose to mobilise in an effort to convince the Commission to renounce their binding objective they believe is unrealistic. The Commission's legislative proposal on this subject is expected on 19 December. (an)
